LEAGUE RULES

Official A.S.L. Rule Book

  1. Athletes roll to see who goes first. The team that rolls the highest number starts. This is the only time a five does not carry a penalty; after the initial roll the die is always live with respect to this rule ("Live").

  2. Play to seven (7), win by two (2).

  3. The game is played with a single (1) die.

  4. Steins (or, if A.S.L. regulation steins are not available, cups) are placed at the four (4) corners of the table in front of each Athlete.

  5. The die is tossed underhand.

  6. Legal Tosses (as further defined herein) require the table to be clear of all debris and all steins must contain beer or, if the Athletes have agreed, another beverage.

  7. Athletes must announce "Snappa" prior to initiating any toss. Said announcement must be made at a volume sufficient for the defending Athletes to hear at any reasonable level of intoxication.

  8. Each toss of the die must be higher than the standing, fully-extended reach of the tallest Athlete playing that game to be score-eligible (a "Legal Toss").

    1. Either the defensive team or the offensive team may call the die "low." A low toss is not a Legal Toss. On throws that fail to meet the minimum altitude requirement, the die remains Live.

  9. Teams and the Athletes thereon alternate tosses. The order of tosses is: Team A Athlete one (1), Team B Athlete one (1), Team A Athlete two (2), Team B Athlete two (2).

  10. To defend against a point, the die must be caught in one hand and not against the body or an object. The die may be juggled from hand to hand so long as only one hand is touching it at once throughout the catch process.

    1. While body catches are prohibited, the die may contact a defending Athlete's body and then result in a legal catch if the die is not caught against said Athlete's body.

    2. A die that comes to rest on an Athlete's body part other than the hand, or exhibits a continued slide/roll down said Athlete's body, is not a legal catch. The determination of such a catch is at the reasonable discretion of the opposing team.

    3. Athletes may both contact a die at any point in the defensive process, so long as all other rules are met.

    4. Athletes may simultaneously catch a die if all other rules are met.

  11. A toss that does not break the offensive team's plane is eligible for one (1) re-toss.

  12. A Legal Toss that passes between the corners of the table on the defensive team's side and is not caught with one (1) hand is a point for the offense.

  13. A toss that goes outside the corners of the table on the defensive team's side is out of bounds.

  14. A Legal Toss that hits an opposing stein is a point for the offense.

    1. A toss of any legality that hits an offensive team's stein is a point for the defending team (an "own goal").

  15. A legal toss remains live while on the table, regardless of if it has contacted the defending team's stein(s). Therefore, an offensive team may still score on themselves by contacting their own stein(s) or allowing the die to pass between their own steins without completing a legal catch.

    1. A five (5) is live regardless of contacting the opposing team's stein(s).

  16. A legal toss that comes to rest in a stein is two (2) points.

    1. A toss of any legality that comes to rest in an offensive team's stein is two (2) points for the defending team (a "Nasty Goalâ„¢").

  17. Winners have the right of first (1st) refusal for the next game.

  18. Winners from the last game get the first (1st) toss.

Drinking Rules:

  1. Athletes must always drink as a team.

  2. By convention, each drink is 1/8 of a full 12 ounce beer.

    1. Athletes may also play where one drink is 1/4 of a full beer, but this is not advised.

    2. While Athletes are not required to drink precisely the defined amount each time, their drink must be consumed within the allotted number of drinks.

  3. Athletes may play with a full or half beer at a time.

  4. A toss that misses the table and breaks the plane of the table requires one (1) penalty drink.

  5. Athletes must have one drink when the other team scores.

  6. If the die is placed or lands on the table on a five (5), the team of the last Athlete to touch the die must finish their drinks and roll the die again. If it lands on a five (5), they must repeat until the die does not land on a 5.

Optional Rules (to be agreed upon by the Athletes):

  1. At the discretion of the defending team, on throws that would have otherwise resulted in a point but were low, the offensive team may be offered a single re-throw as a courtesy. It is recommended that teams decide at the beginning of the game if this courtesy will be upheld.

  2. If the die lands in an Athlete's stein, that Athlete must chug his/her beer and spit out the die to roll. Rules for 5 apply.

    1. During the 2020 COVID-19 Pandemic, the Austin Snappa League does not endorse this rule. Please consult with your attorney as needed.
